Amathusiidae, The Jungle Queens
Blue Violet Jungle Glories

Who would have thought such color could adorn the wings of these jungle queens with large and shapely wings! They just arrived from Malaysia. The males, like most butterflies have the strong bright blue violet colors. The females are larger most times, less colorful, but are rare and only a few females were captured.

Enjoy the selection and you might want to get two of each male since they are so different on both sides!....More

Brassolidae, Owl Butterflies
Caligo Butterflies at Dusk

Just when the sun settles and most butterflies have retired for the day, the GIANT OWL BUTTERFLIES (Caligo's) make their appearance. They are low and lazy flyers attracted to rotting fruit on the jungle floor, especially bananas. Of course enemy birds see them instantly - but the giant owl butterflies show off prominant 'eyespots' on the underside of their wings which spook and startle most predators! How clever is that?....More

Danaidae, The Milkweeds
The Rice Paper Butterflies

Some of my favorite butterflies in the world include the black and white giant Oriental rice papers. Each species and each island location has different markings. Some differences are sublte and some vary drastically. The rare "Tambusisiana" is the largest and most desirable of all, and an investment in natural history. Written by Constance Hurt

The 'Idea' butterflies appear to sail in the sky with a slow and lazy flight. Their common name 'rice paper butterfly' was given because of thei....More
