Amathusiidae, The Jungle Queens
Blue Violet Jungle Glories

 Who would have thought such color could adorn the wings of these jungle queens with large and shapely wings! They just arrived from Malaysia. The males, like most butterflies have the strong bright blue violet colors. The females are larger most times, less colorful, but are rare and only a few females were captured.

Enjoy the selection and you might want to get two of each male since they are so different on both sides!....More

Caligo Butterflies at Dusk

 Just when the sun settles and most butterflies have retired for the day, the GIANT OWL BUTTERFLIES (Caligo's) make their appearance. They are low and lazy flyers attracted to rotting fruit on the jungle floor, especially bananas. Of course enemy birds see them instantly - but the giant owl butterflies show off prominant 'eyespots' on the underside of their wings which spook and startle most predators! How clever is that?....More
